Apart from a breeze that was going to take its toll 5km into the 10km run from Docklands, City2Bay runners awoke on race day, Sunday January 9 to an almost perfect day for a run in Melbourne.

The day before had started out in blistering heat but by mid-afternoon was threatening and then fulfilled its promise of storms and gale force winds, bringing undone some of the venue fit-out. Flags along the finish line that had hung limply moments before in 36C degree heat were suddenly turned into sails fluttering furiously against a chill wind.
